Back-to-School Checklist: Preparing for a Safe and Successful Year

By Oliver Barnes, DTI

As another school year begins, it's crucial to prioritize the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff. Here's a comprehensive checklist to ensure your school is prepared for a secure start:

  1. Update Emergency Response Plans: Review and revise your emergency protocols, ensuring they're up-to-date and easily accessible to all staff members.

  2. Enhance Physical Security: Check all locks, security cameras, and alarm systems. Replace or repair any faulty equipment.

  3. Staff Training: Conduct refresher courses on security procedures, including active shooter drills and emergency evacuations.

  4. Visitor Management: Implement or update visitor check-in systems to track who enters and exits the building.

  5. Cybersecurity Measures: Update firewalls, antivirus software, and educate staff and students about online safety.

  6. Communication Systems: Test all internal and external communication systems, including PA systems and mass notification tools.

  7. Mental Health Resources: Ensure counseling services are readily available and that staff are trained to recognize signs of distress in students.

  8. 3D Mapping and Building Plans: Create or update detailed 3D models and maps of school buildings. This crucial step aids first responders in navigating the premises quickly during emergencies. Consider using advanced technologies like LiDAR scanning for accurate, up-to-date representations of your school's layout.

  9. Transportation Safety: Review bus routes and safety procedures for student pick-up and drop-off areas.

  10. Community Partnerships: Strengthen relationships with local law enforcement and emergency services.

Remember, school security is an ongoing process. Regular reviews and updates to these measures throughout the year will help maintain a safe learning environment for everyone.
